There are alternatives to banks. Credit Unions, financial co-operatives, are democratic organizations that serve its members. They do not pay huge bonuses. Profits stay within the community. When banks were creating a world-wide economic crisis, credit unions remained safe. It is a huge movement all over the world. At the end of 2008:
* Credit Unions existed in 97 countries * Some 177 million people are credit union members * Assets totaled US$1.19 trillion at the end of 2008.
The UN has declared 2012 the International Year of the Co-operative.
Here is a list of trade organizations that serve credit unions in their individual organizations. Check with them to find a credit union to serve your needs.
It is alphabetical by country. In come cases we could not find complete address information. Some do not have websites, but we have tried to present enough information for contact.
